North Carolina deputy killed when semi overturns on cruiser

A 54-year-old sergeant from the Union County Sheriff's Office was killed when a tractor-trailer overturned onto his cruiser on Nov. 19. He is the first deputy to die in the line of duty in the county's history.

According to authorities, the deputy was stopped with two other vehicles at a red light at the intersection of Highway 74 and South Sutherland Avenue in Monroe around 7 a.m. when an approaching semi failed to brake in time for the light. The semi driver swerved left to avoid a collision and jack-knifed his rig, causing the vehicle to flip on its side. The 18-wheeler landed directly on top of the deputy's cruiser and also damaged a nearby Kia.

The deputy, who had been with the sheriff's office since 2004, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. The semi driver and the Kia driver were taken to local hospitals with undisclosed injuries.

The semi driver, a Fayetteville resident, has held a commercial motor vehicle license for almost 20 years. He has five citations and three crashes on his record. He was initially charged with failure to reduce speed causing an accident, but those charges have been dropped.

Commercial truck drivers have a responsibility to safely operate their vehicles at all times. When someone is killed due to the negligent actions of another driver, surviving family members may wish to take advantage of North Carolina's wrongful death statute in order to recover damages. A lawyer with a background in wrongful death litigation may be able to obtain financial compensation for a victim's family that reimburses them for medical costs, funeral expenses, lost wages and loss of companionship.
