North Carolina woman killed in moped crash

According to authorities with the North Carolina Highway Patrol, a car-moped crash that occurred near Monroe on Dec. 4 killed a 50-year-old Marshville woman. The accident occurred around 1 a.m. on U.S. 601 near its intersection with Macedonia Road.

A 22-year-old Wingate woman was driving north in the left lane of the divided highway. She struck a northbound moped, which was being operated by a 62-year-old Marshville man, from behind. The impact of the rear-end collision caused both individuals on the moped to be thrown off the vehicle.

The female passenger on the moped was declared dead at the crash scene by emergency personnel while the moped operator was transported to CMC-Union Hospital. He was later transferred to the Carolina's Medical Center for further treatment of the serious injuries he suffered in the wreck.

The younger woman was arrested and charged with felony death by vehicle. She was being held in the Union County Jail pending resolution of her charges. There was no word regarding what caused the collision or if speed or alcohol were factors. Law enforcement did indicate that there was heavy fog in the area at the time of the accident.

Drivers are supposed to remain alert to traffic around them and to slow down if weather or road conditions mandate additional caution. When a driver kills another person due to driving too fast for conditions or failing to pay attention to other motorists, the decedent's family might be able to hold the at-fault individual accountable for their crash-related expenses by filing a wrongful death claim against him or her.
