2 university students involved in crash, 1 dies

Tragedy recently struck the campus of North Carolina Central University. One student died in a fatal car accident that occurred while another student from the university was behind the wheel.

According to Durham police, the crash occurred on March 31 at approximately 6:39 p.m., as the two students drove along Highway 55 near its intersection with Crete Street. The car crossed over the centerline and struck a 2008 Chevy Cobalt.

A 22-year-old recreation administration major with a focus on sports management and a business minor died from injuries she suffered in the crash. The college senior was from Greensboro and was team manager for both the women's basketball and the football teams.

The driver of the 2000 Honda Accord was a 19-year-old sophomore at the university. He was a player on the football team. Both he and the 27-year-old Cobalt driver were treated for injuries that appeared not to be life-threatening.

As of the time of the published report, charges had not been filed, and the investigation continues. Preliminary investigative findings indicate that speed may have been a factor in the fatal crash.

Whenever a young person's life is snuffed out in a senseless accident, it is a tragedy. Certainly, her friends and family will be grieving their loss for some time.

In cases such as this, criminal charges may or may not be forthcoming for the driver. Families can struggle mightily with the perceived injustice if this is the case. Seeking a civil remedy through the North Carolina courts may be their only recourse in the matter when this happens.
