Elements of a medical malpractice case

In North Carolina medical malpractice lawsuits, the fact that a patient suffered an injury is not enough to result in favorable findings for the plaintiff. First, after proving that an injury exists, the plaintiff must demonstrate to the court that the defendant owed a legal duty to the injured party. Then the appropriate level of care must be established. Finally, the case must be made that the defendant failed to provide such care.

Orthopedic complications in North Carolina

Each year, legal claims are made against orthopedic surgeons for alleged poor performance and other issues related to the perioperative period. Many times, the physician, surgical staff and hospital personnel can take certain precautions that help minimize complications or be sure that problems are promptly noticed when they arise. Communication among the team members and with the patient and his or her family members are vital to ensuring a successful recovery.

Improving medical communication in North Carolina

Communication between doctors and patients and doctors and medical staff is an essential part of properly diagnosing and caring for people. If a patient's symptoms are not properly documented, it can prevent physicians from being able to accurately determine a diagnosis and prescribe correct treatment.

Non-technical skills and their impact on surgical procedures

A group of researchers at the University of Aberdeen have written a new book called Enhancing Surgical Performance: A Primer in Non-Technical Skills. It aims to act as a handbook for surgeons in North Carolina and around the country to help them avoid mistakes and improve their accuracy in the operating room. The book analyzes the importance of a surgeon being able to make decisions, act as a leader and show good situational awareness when making a decision.
