Investigators have impounded the tractor-trailer truck of a North Carolina man suspected of causing a serious accident that left another truck driver with severe burns.
The commercial truck accident occurred when the suspect allegedly sideswiped the other driver, diverting his truck and causing it to strike a concrete median. The truck that was hit then burst into flames. The driver whose truck was hit suffered serious burns as a result of the incident. Investigators say he was transported to a burn center where he remains in critical condition. The suspect is accused of fleeing the scene.
The suspect denies having caused the truck crash, claiming that a tire on the other driver's vehicle blew out, causing it to veer into the median. However, investigators found that the suspect's truck showed damage consistent with those typically caused by sideswipes. Additionally, several witnesses reported seeing the accident. They claim that the suspect then stopped and exited his truck to view the accident. After seeing at the burning wreckage, he allegedly returned to his truck and fled the scene.
The suspect was found at a rest stop around three hours after the accident. He has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident with injury and is being held on $5,000 bond. A police representative announced that additional charges are likely to be filed.
A passing pickup was struck by debris from the crash, causing its driver and passenger to sustain injuries. The passenger was released from the hospital, but the driver remains in critical condition.
