Court dismisses civil judgment in tobacco case

Many North Carolina residents have benefitted from tobacco settlements. After all, the southeastern part of the nation is the seat of the nation's cigarette industry. Now, a new change to a civil suit against tobacco companies may change the way settlements are distributed among smoking's many victims. The family of a Boston woman will not receive the full $81 million in punitive damages awarded in a wrongful death suit related to tobacco use.

Scooter riders killed in police crash

Two men who had reportedly stolen a scooter from a Raleigh, North Carolina, home suffered catastrophic injuries in a fatal accident on June 5. The two young men aboard the scooter were killed when they were caught between two area police cruisers that were on separate missions in the Raleigh area.

Camera rope plunges into crowd at NASCAR race

A tragic accident at North Carolina's Charlotte Motor Speedway injured 10 fans on May 23 during the running of the Coca-Cola 600. The accident, which could have caused catastrophic injuries, occurred when a rope guiding an overhead television camera fell from above, striking the track. Three of the victims were treated and released from the hospital. An additional seven victims received first-aid treatment at the track. Vehicles on the track were also damaged in connection with the incident.
