North Carolina nursing home stats on the upswing

Newly released information shows that the incidence of nursing home neglect may be dwindling in North Carolina, but it appears the state still has a long way to go before its facilities can be considered better than average. A recent survey from the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services shows that about 16 percent of the state's nursing homes were considered five-star establishments, providing the best in services and care.

Teen sentenced in fatal racing crash

The Orange County teenager accused of racing his vehicle against a rival truck, resulting in a fatal accident, has pleaded guilty to willful speed violation and reckless driving. A plea agreement has resulted in the dismissal of two charges of misdemeanor death. The young driver entered the plea even as relatives of the two decedents in the case sat in the courtroom.

North Carolina town under fire for 2011 drowning death

A North Carolina town is facing a civil suit in connection with the drowning death of a 19-year-old Raleigh man in 2011. The Town of Carolina Beach is implicated in the wrongful death suit, which was filed by the young man's father. News reports show the suit was filed in Hanover Superior Court in late June.

Inmates: Guard murdered prisoner

Investigators are still seeking answers in connection with the alleged wrongful death of a Wake County inmate, but new information could prove useful in the civil case associated with the man's demise. Authorities have not yet released the 40-year-old decedent's formal cause of death, but an attorney for the man's family claims that the victim died from catastrophic injuries.

Driver sentenced for role in fatal September crash

The driver who caused a fatal car accident that killed a North Carolina woman said he feels remorse for the collision. The 20-year-old man was facing criminal charges in connection with the accident, which could also be the cause of a wrongful death civil suit. The driver pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide charges in connection with the Sept. 3 incident, and he will spend between eight and 23 months in the custody of the county. The man must then serve seven years' probation, according to local news reports.
